Constituents include minerals, of which over 66% are silicic acids and silicates, plus potassium, aluminum, and manganese. The other components include flavonoids, mainly quercetin glycosides ( quercetin 3-glucoside and its malonyl esters), polyphenolic acids (including di-E-caffeoyl-meso- tartaric acid, plus methyl esters of protocatechic and caffeic acids), alkaloids (traces of nicotine); polyenic acids, rare dicarboxylic acids and phytosterols.
The high content of silicic acids dedicates the Horsetail extract for the skin firming purposes. Beside this property, it acts as an anti-microbiological agent, and thus, it is indicated as supportive matter to poorly healing wounds e.g. including problems with finger nails.
